Annotation -
Toxicology deals with the interaction of xenobiotics and a living organism, it is a subject summarizing basic
information about substances that negatively affect and damage a living organism.
The one-semester elective course Medical Toxicology builds on the information obtained from the general
toxicology seminars during the pharmacology seminars in the winter semester. Introduces students to the fate of
toxic substances in the body and their effects on the body. It expands the knowledge of toxic substances and
intoxications that future physicians may encounter in their practice.
In this course, students will become familiar with various toxicants and toxidromes of substances that cannot be
discussed in detail within the standard curriculum of Pharmacology II due to the limited time available. Emphasis
is placed on intoxications that are of clinical significance, including their diagnosis, treatment, and practical
implications.

a. Introduction to Toxicology - prof. PharmDr. Radek Kučera, Ph. D.

Definition of the field, basic terminology, and principles.

b. Toxicology of Inorganic Compounds - MUDr. Michal Jirásko

Acids, hydroxides, and peroxides. Poisoning with carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide, cyanide compounds. Asbestos. Metal poisoning - copper, silver, zinc, cadmium, chromium. Aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons. Alcohols.

2. Toxicology of Natural Toxins I. - Ing. Eliška Fousková

Overview of toxicodynamics, toxicokinetics, and toxidromes of selected natural toxins. Bacterial and fungal toxins. Cyanobacteria and algae toxins. Case reports.

3. Toxicology of Natural Toxins II. - MUDr. Michal Jirásko

Overview of toxicodynamics, toxicokinetics, and toxidromes of selected natural toxins. Plant toxins - terpenes, glycosides, amino acids, alkaloids, etc. not discussed in Pharmacology II seminars. Case reports.

4. Food Toxicology - PharmDr. et Bc. Eva Dědečková

Basic concepts, sources of contamination. Toxicants formed during food processing. Mechanisms of toxic effects. Food additives and their effect on human health. Genetically modified foods.

5. Environmental Toxicology - Mgr. et Bc. Roman Viták

Definition, history of the field. Overview of basic environmental contaminants. Impacts of acute and chronic exposures to anthropogenic chemicals and natural toxins. Endocrine disruptors, pharmaceuticals, pesticides, flame retardants.

6. Toxicology of Cosmetics - MUDr. Hedvika Hatáková

History of cosmetic products and their effects on the human body. Toxic ingredients, additives, and contaminants of commonly used drugstore products.

7. Biological and chemical terrorism - Mgr. et Bc. Roman Viták

History of the use of chemical weapons. Nerve agents. Blistering substances. Suffocating substances. Generally poisonous substances. Mentally incapacitating substances. Biological weapons - bacteria and viruses.

Learning outcomes -

Students will gain a basic overview of the toxic and otherwise negative effects of selected xenobiotics on the human body.

Students will be able to describe the toxicodynamic and toxicokinetic profile of these compounds.

Students will be familiar with the basic diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in the field of toxicology.

Students will be able to communicate with toxicology departments and understand their findings.
