Annotation -
The course focuses on teaching specific vocabulary and grammar that should enable students of dental medicine to use and understand medical resources and preparing students to take and understand patient medical histories, and improve their skills in history taking.

Learning outcomes -

Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:

  • Describe the basic structure of the human body, selected organ systems (cardiovascular, respiratory, digestive), and the oral cavity (arches, teeth, instruments). 

  • Use basic medical terminology and understand the roles of healthcare professions. 

  • Differentiate between family and personal medical history, collect information about symptoms (pain, complaints), and conduct a patient interview. 

  • Perform basic physical examinations, interpret results, and propose a treatment plan. 

  • Identify common oral diseases, suggest further examinations, and explain treatment procedures to patients.

  • Apply principles of communication in healthcare and explain the importance of the therapeutic relationship between doctor and patient. 

  • Correctly use articles, tenses (past, future), and the passive voice in medical English. 

  • Differentiate between countable/uncountable nouns and form conditional sentences. 

  • Use medical prefixes, suffixes, phrasal verbs, and create nouns from verbs. 

  • Express location, size, and measurement results using proper terminology. 

  • Transform direct into indirect speech in the context of patient communication. 

  • Explain medical terms to laypersons clearly and understandably, and formulate patient instructions.
