Annotation - Czech

The course Current Issues in Pharmacology follows the basic 2-semester pharmacology. During the semester, students will focus on chapters that did not fit into basic pharmacology and are currently undergoing rapid development. At the same time, the orientation to clinical practice is remembered - students will practice already acquired theoretical knowledge and their application in solving clinical cases in a special course in MOODLE.

At the same time, students will participate in laboratory examination of vitamin D blood levels, monitoring the effectiveness of its supplementation and evaluation of its quality.

Syllabus

1. Vitamins D - only a trending topic? (or will be something on it…?)

Basic concepts, discovery, and history of the use of vitamin D. The beginnings of the use of the effects of vitamin D - solar and UV therapy. Vitamin D metabolism, reference values. Vitamin D and the immune system. Use of vitamin D in sports.

Blood draw and determination of vitamin D levels (for volunteers). Correspondence assessment of vitamin D levels and supplementation using cholecalciferol. Taking cholecalciferol for 1 month, then a second blood draw.

 Prof. PharmDr. Radek Kucera, PhD.

2.  Why do we need antibiotic stewardship

How does antibiotic resistance develop? How difficult is it to bring a new antibiotic to market? Why should we be concerned about the future of antibiotics?

MUDr. Lucie Racková

3. Microbiome

Important milestones in microbiome research from history to the present. Composition of the human microbiome and the factors that affect it. Physiological roles of the microbiome, dysbiosis. Application of microbiome knowledge in clinical practice (fecal microbiota transplant, probiotics, dietary recommendations). Interactions between the microbiome and medications.

Mgr. Pavlína Černá

4. Farmacovigilance

MUDr. Věra Uldrichová

5. Alternative medicine, homeopathy

PharmDr. et Bc. Eva Dědečková

6. Vitamin D - evaluation

Evaluation of measured vitamin D levels, evaluation of supplementation success.

Supplementation models, calculation of the loading dose. Risks associated with hypovitaminosis.
