Lectures (2 hours per week) and practical exercises (2 hours per week) in the winter semester will focus on the most common diseases in cardiology and angiology, the most important lung diseases, and basic diseases in hematology. The summer semester will cover endocrinological diseases, including diabetes mellitus, and rheumatology. Another part of the lectures will be devoted to the differential diagnosis of the most common pathological conditions in internal medicine. For all topics, emphasis will be placed on understanding the basic etiology of the disease, typical symptoms, syndromes, and general clinical manifestations. Diagnostic options and treatment principles will be presented. Due to the limited time of the lecture (2 teaching hours), clinical issues of diseases can only be mentioned in a brief overview. Lectures are optional but highly recommended. In order to understand the clinical issues of these diseases, basic knowledge gained from preclinical disciplines, i.e., anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pathophysiology, and pathology, as well as the basics of pharmacology, is assumed and required.
In addition to attending lectures, we strongly recommend that all students create an account on the osmosis.org learning platform and work with it. Access to Osmosis.org is free for all students and is an excellent educational tool, including case studies with questions and explanations of the correct answers. Exam requirements There is no exam in the winter semester. In the summer semester, students take an oral exam. They draw a pair of questions, have 20 minutes to prepare, and then answer. Course supervisor The course supervisor for this academic year is Prof. MUDr. Martin Matějovič, Ph.D. The deputy supervisor is the deputy head of teaching, Doc. MUDr. Jaromír Eiselt, Ph.D. Last update: Psutková Veronika, Ing. (20.02.2026)

By completing the cycle of lectures and practical classes, students will acquire the basic knowledge necessary for the recognition and treatment of diseases covered in the syllabus. Practical teaching (2 hours per week) serves to practice basic practical skills (taking a medical history and performing a physical examination) that students learned in the previous semester in the Internal Medicine I course. Students will also practice describing ECG curves, learn about the most common arrhythmias and the typical picture of acute coronary syndromes. In medical history taking, students will improve their skills in taking a targeted medical history and performing a targeted physical examination based on the symptoms and current presentation of the patient. Teachers will try to select patients with diseases that have been currently discussed in lectures for practical teaching. Although lectures are voluntary, if a student does not attend lectures, they should study the diseases covered on an ongoing basis (according to the lecture syllabus) in order to be prepared for practical teaching. Students may participate (passively) with their instructor, depending on operational possibilities, in any procedures and treatments performed in the relevant department or at complementary workplaces (e.g., blood and other biological material collection, vital sign monitoring, thoracic puncture, ascites puncture, catheterization, obtaining vascular access, central vein cannulation, etc.).
