Annotation
First Aid teaches basic techniques and approach used in First Aid. That includes basic CPR according to latest guidelines. The course involves 6 lectures that give the necessary pre-learning background followed by 14 subsequent practical seminars. Mini – Simulations and Case-Based learning will be the main teaching forms. The 13th seminar is dedicated to revision of difficult topics or as a substitute for cancelled ones. The 14th seminar is for testing the practical approach and gained skills. Credits will be given and participants will be examined on delivering first aid. All students will be actively involved in simulations. We belive that personal experience is the best way to learn. Students are expected to perform tasks, act as voluteers during the seminars.We will teach you how to save lives, but we cannot do it without your involvement. There is a possibility for getting dirty clothes. Students are advised to wear a propriate outfits for the classes. Lectures take place at Pelouchova lecture Hall at Plzeńská campus. Practical seminars take place in room B110 Plzeňská campus. Substitution for missed classes is possible within one week only. There is no possibility to come any other weeks. All missed content needs to be self studied. If a student has no other chance but to attend practical seminar with a different study group an email must be sent to the responsible staff whether there is a room. Course completion requirements

Credits are given for attendance of the seminars. All seminars ale compulsory.

There is a necessary pre- learning to be fulfilled in order to be able to follow the seminars.

!!! Prior to each seminar, students must pass a mandatory test in Moodle to be permitted to attend!!!

The exam is practical, starting the last week of teaching ie. the 14th week of teaching.

In case of more than two missed seminars there will be an additional testing and credits may not be given.

If there are more than 4 missed seminars the subject needs to be taken again.

The exam is practical, starting the last week of teaching during normal scheduled seminars.

You will be asked to perform First Aid ad various clinical conditions. Any time you may be asked to perform BLS.

Requirements to the exam

The exam is practical, apart from BLS, you will be asked to perofom First Aid at following:

1. Unconsciousness – basic approach

2. Suffocation in children and adults, foreign body airway obstruction, drowning

3. Bleeding, amputation

4. Positioning, transportation

5. Principles of first-aid, safety, communication with integrated rescue system

6. Injury of bones and joints, immobilization

7. Car accident – basics of safety approach

8. Car accident – main rules of the first contact with injured

9. Spinal injury

10. Dyspnea – adults

11. Dyspnea – children

12. First aid in patients with diabetes

13. Cramps, stroke, central nervous system infections

14. First aid in pregnancy, childbirth

15. Initial treatment in a newborn

16. Burns, sunstroke

17. Hypothermia, frostbites, electric current injury

18. Allergy, anaphylaxis

19. Intoxication, chemical injury

20. Acute situations in children

21. Facial injury – basic treatment

Syllabus

Lectures – 6 weeks (1 hour 40 minutes)

1. Organization, CPR (guidelines, children, adult, newborn, AED, telephonically – assisted CPR), unconsciousness, self-safety, positioning

2. Bleeding, amputation, bandages, injury of joints and bones, immobilization, car-accident, spinal injury, transport, facial injury (teeth, eye, epistaxis)

3. First aid in patients with diabetes, cramps, stroke, central nervous system infections, intoxication, chemical injury

4. First aid in pregnancy, childbirth, approach to newborn, acute situations in children

5. Burn and heat injury, hypothermia, frostbite, electric current injury

6. Dyspnea, suffocation – foreign body airway obstruction, asthma, allergy, anaphylaxis, pneumothorax, hyperventilation, myocardial infarction

1. Organization, simulation medicine, unconsciousness, positioning, self-safety

4. CPR complex scenarios (telephonically – assisted CPR, AED, resuscitation masks)

9. First aid in pregnancy, childbirth, approach to newborn

12. Acute conditions in children (epiglottitis, laryngitis, febrile cramps, abdominal pain, foreign body – airways, gastro-intestinal system, hypothermia, communication)
