The summer internship after the 4th year is based on the knowledge gained from the 4th year courses.

The student chooses an internship from one of the courses taken.

In the case of internal medicine (internal medicine, paediatrics), the scope of practice involves the practical application of internal medicine knowledge for examination of adult and paediatric patients and writing medical reports. The student will work in the internal medicine or paediatrics department under the guidance and supervision of a senior physician, and present patients during rounds. The student will also attend one on-call shift. Practical skills training: administration of subcutaneous, intramuscular, and intravenous injections and infusions, venous blood collection. Participation in peripheral and central venous catheter insertion, bladder catheterization, gastric tube insertion, gastric lavage and initiation of cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Separate urine chemistry, stool examination for occult bleeding (Haemoccult), and glucose determination by glucometer. Participation in recording the ECG curve or independent performance. Attendance at diagnostic and therapeutic procedures: endoscopy (GI tract), echocardiography, exercise testing, sternal puncture, paracentesis, possibly lumbar puncture. Participation in radiology examinations and departmental seminars. Familiarity with the principles of blood transfusion - indications and administration, participation in blood sampling and practical transfusion. Visiting a specialised clinic for chronically ill children, training in communication with children and their parents. The paediatric practice includes the Neonatal Unit with physiological newborns, physical examination and treatment of the newborn in the delivery room under the supervision of a neonatologist and a paediatric nurse, Apgar score, follow-up care in the department of physiological newborns, physical examination and treatment of the newborn, general assessment of the newborn - typology, postural reflexes, spontaneous manifestations and other manifestations detectable by sight. Daily routine of the newborn, nutrition, breastfeeding, blood collection for screening and treatment of the umbilical stump.

Practical training in surgical specialties from the 4th year (surgery, ophthalmology, ENT, dentistry, musculoskeletal traumatology) includes an internship in the departments of the chosen specialty. During the internship, the student will become familiar with the operation of the department, admission, patient examination, documentation, discharge and writing the medical record. They are present repeatedly in the operating theatre - they get acquainted with the operation of operating theatres, different operating techniques allowed by the specialty, methods of assisting in the operating theatre. Assisting with dressings, dressing of the surgical wound with removal of sutures. Surgical treatment of simple open wounds according to the possibilities of the field. Assisting with outpatient treatment and monitoring of patients and attending night duty.

Experience in other disciplines in the fourth year (clinical biochemistry, clinical genetics, forensic medicine, medical imaging, medical psychology, and rehabilitation). The content of the internship is based on becoming familiar with the specifics of the field.

In laboratory disciplines such as biochemistry and genetics, the internship includes becoming acquainted with the operation of laboratories, laboratory techniques used within the department, receiving samples, processing them, and issuing results. At the same time, familiarisation with the outpatient component of the field, consultation of results, examination and monitoring of patients in the outpatient clinic, communication with the patient, writing an outpatient report.

Practice in imaging methods includes observing the physician's work on each imaging modality (ultrasound, X-ray, CT, MRI, other specialised exams), preparing the patient for the exam, assessing the risks to the patient during the exam, performing the exam, how to process the result and evaluate. The student will also learn about the indications for individual examinations and the night duty of physicians.

Practice in rehabilitation is possible only in an inpatient rehabilitation unit. It includes patient admission, a comprehensive examination of the musculoskeletal system, documentation management, the design of treatment methods, a detailed introduction to rehabilitation methods and their indications and specifics, including physical methods.
