The subject is framed as theoretical and practical. It systematically defines nursing as a modern discipline with its own holistic philosophy, system of values, subject of research, and with its own methodology. It makes students familiar with historical development of nursing in Czech Republic and elsewhere in the world, and with the main tasks and functions of nursing in society. It allows students to understand the main task of professional nursing practice, which is to maintain and satisfy essential needs of patients /clients, families and communities. It provides introduction to the classification of human needs based on a different disciplines and authors and it focuses on reactions and manifestations of unsatisfied needs of healthy people, sick people, people with disabilities and the dying. From the practical point of view, there is a focus on teaching of nursing procedures and interventions in laboratory conditions and in clinical practice. Practical exercises allow students to acquire main manual skills and assurance of a safe and quality implementation of nursing procedures and patient related interventions.
