Annotation -
The course is designed for students in their 4th to 6th year of study, who are interested in general surgery. The course is skill based, focused on hands-on training using models and simulators (see the schedule of individual blocks). The goal is to practically prepare students for entry into surgical fields, preferably general surgery. Students will acquire basic practical skills, enabling them to decide on wound treatment methods and perform the procedures. The students will learn fundamental surgical principles, procedures, and terminology. Selection for the course is based on motivational letters submitted before the start of the academic year. The course capacity is limited to 10 students. The selection process will be announced to future 4th-6th year students via email in advance.

Syllabus -

1) Introduction of surgical instruments and suturing material. Suture of the skin, suture extraction.

2) Indications for suturing, choice of suturing material. Suture of a model of mouth, ear, eye, nose.

3) Hand knotting, hemostatic methods. Nevus excision, cyst exstirpation.

4) Abscess treatment, chronic wound treatment. Wound and SSI care. Wet healing, pressure ulcers and difficult to treat wounds.

5) Laparotomy opening and closure. Intestine suture, vascular suture, tendon suture.

6) Laparoscopy training, repetition of gained knowledge.

The course will take place each Thursday for six weeks since 6th of March. Each Thursday starting at 16:00 in room 110 building H (Secretariat of general surgery).
