Annotation -
The course is designed as an introduction into the language of medicine, showing the origins of the medical terms, its language analysis and grammatical structures (Latin as well as Greek). Such an understanding of the specialised terminology is essential for its correct lexical and grammatical usage.

Aim of the course -

 

Students will familiarize themselves with the structure of the Latin and Greek medical terminology, they will learn to analyse the terms from the grammatical, morphological, and even etymological points of view and to use them functionally. They will further develop their knowledge through understanding the terms in the broader context of the language and the content.

Requirements to the exam -

Winter semester:

Passing two tests (mid-term and final) during the semester (70% pass) on the Moodle 3 platform, plus course attendance (max. three absences in the winter semester) - in that case students are awarded credit. Neither test can be re-sat, regardless of the reason for absence or failure. If students do not meet the requirements (passing two tests and meeting the course attendance targets), they have to write the credit test (70% pass).

There is 1 regular and 3 possible re-sittings for the credit test.

Credit tests will be held in Week 15 and in the examination period.

Summer semester:

If a student does not acquire winter semester credit, they may still participate in summer semester classes and take the mid-term and final tests. However, they will only get the summer credit after receiving the winter credit. If a student wishes to acquire the winter or summer credit in a different academic year to the one in which they attended Medical Terminology classes, they have to take a credit test.

The winter semester credit test and the summer semester credit test cannot be taken on one exam date; the tests must be taken on separate exam dates.

EXAM

The exam consists of a written test (70% pass) and an oral examination. If a student achieves 95% or more on the written test, the oral section of the exam is cancelled.
There is one regular and two possible re-sittings for the exam; the last one is commissional.

If a student fails the oral examination, they have to write the exam test again in their next attempt.

If the examiner discovers that the student lacks the knowledge of basic medical terms in Latin/Greek, they may choose to end the exam immediately and fail the student.

Syllabus -

COURSE SYLLABUS:

Winter Term:

The development of medical terminology from a historical context; methods of study; program of the course.
Basic Latin grammatical terminology. Latin word categories. Word forms. Flexion. Pronunciation and intonation. Medical vocabulary (Latin/Greek) in framework of particular disciplines; the context of the English language.
Declension of Latin nouns and adjectives: 1st declension. Prepositions used with the accusative and the ablative case. Vocabulary - basic rules.
Declension of Latin nouns and adjectives: 2nd declension. Ordinal numbers. The structure of an anatomical term. 

TEST 1

Declension of Latin nouns: 4th declension. 

Declension of Latin nouns: 5th declension. Substantivization of adjectives. 

Declension of Latin nouns: 3rd declension - imparisyllaba (tumor - operatio - corpus).
Declension of Latin nouns: 3rd declension - i-stems (auris, dens) and exceptions to the 3rd declension rules. 

Irregular and defective comparison of adjectives. 
Revision of the 1st-5th declensions Latin nouns, and adjectives of 1st and 2nd declensions.  

TEST 2

Combining all types of nouns with an adjective. Prepositional phrases. Revision.

Summer Term

Revision of the winter term.

Greek nouns in the Latin declension (1st and 2nd declensions): acne - diabetes. ganglion 

Greek nouns in the Latin declension (3rd declension): ureter - basis - trauma; terminological classification of illness: -itis, -osis, -oma. Diagnosis clinica. 

Latin adjectives of the 3rd declension. Third declension adjectives (revision).

TEST 1

Greek stems – their use in nouns and adjectives.
Adverbs (a brief survey). Latin numerals. Declension of unus, duo, tres
Greek numerals. Medical abbreviations. Names of drugs.
Latin and Greek prefixes and suffixes. Combining forms. English equivalents.
Dividing MT into component parts. 
Greek and Latin vocabulary understanding. Identification of an expression within the grammatical system.
Practical use of Latin/Greek terms. Diagnostic procedures and surgical interventions in MT.
Compounds (noun + noun; noun + adjective; noun + verb; adverb + verb; numeral + noun; multiplied compounds; hybrids). Derivatives. English derivation of a medical term on the basis of Latin.

Linguistic analysis of a complex medical term into morphological components; selecting meaningful units; creating medical concepts. MT practice.

TEST 2
Revision of grammar and vocabulary.
