Requirements to the exam -

Exam Structure

The exam consists of preparing written materials based on independent reading of a foreign-language academic specialized text and an oral part (analysis of both an unfamiliar and a previously studied text).

Students must arrange the exam date with the examiner, Dr. Obstová, via email at zora.obstova@ff.cuni.cz. The written materials must also be submitted in advance to this email after prior agreement.

Written Materials

Students must submit:

  • The selected foreign-language academic specialized text in electronic format or as a scanned file in a single document (10–20 standard pages) with basic bibliographic information.
  • A summary of the academic specialized text with references to relevant passages (in Czech, approx. 1 standard page).
  • Explanation of key terms from the text (approx. 5 terms – original term in the source language, Czech equivalent, and a contextual explanation related to the chosen text).

Academic Specialized Foreign-Language Text (10–20 Standard Pages)

The text must be a recent academic specialized article written by a native speaker and/or published in a reputable international journal or by a recognized publisher, and it must not have been translated into Czech. The article should be relevant to the student’s studies—ideally related to their seminar, bachelor's, or master's thesis, or at least connected to their field of study. It is recommended to consult the suitability of the text in advance with the examiner.

Oral Exam (Conducted in Czech)

  • Analysis of an unfamiliar humanities-related academic specialized text (1–2 standard pages, questions in Czech, focus on global text comprehension, key terms, fundamental relationships, and structures; students have 15–20 minutes for preparation).
  • Presentation of the independently read academic text (its relation to the student’s field of study, its contribution to the given issue, the author's argumentation, and its evaluation).
  • Analysis of a specific passage from the text selected by the examiner (focus on detailed text comprehension).

Students must bring a clean copy of the text, without any notes. If using an electronic format, students must provide their own laptop or tablet.
