This course introduces students to the major theories and related research that seek to understand the nature of basic mental phenomena such as sensing, perception, attention, learning, memory, problem solving, and decision making. The course also includes more general, methodologically oriented topics related to the way mental phenomena are known and the nature of psychological laws.
The aim of the course is to present general psychology as a "backbone" discipline in the system of psychological sciences (basic and applied) and to provide a philosophically and methodologically grounded theoretical basis for the understanding of psychological phenomena, processes, states and properties; psychological laws and the main knowledge about them. Acquired knowledge: the student can explain the basic approaches to gaining knowledge about mental phenomena and the nature of the discovered psychological laws; he/she can describe and explain the essence of selected theories and related research that seek to understand the nature of basic mental phenomena. Acquired skills: the student is able to identify and characterize the key differences between the individual theories of selected mental phenomena; is able to use the description of the research design and the data/observations obtained to infer what the research conducted implies for the understanding of the mental phenomenon in question and is able to assess the basic limits of the knowledge obtained about mental phenomena that arise from the chosen method of their investigation. <br> Course content: - subject of general psychology; - psychological laws and determinations of the psyche; - introduction to cognitive psychology; - sensing and psychophysics; - perception; - attention; - memory; - learning; - thinking - concepts, reasoning; - thinking - problem solving Last update: Lukavský Jiří, doc.
