The first half of a two-semester course surveying James Joyce's four crucial works. In the winter semester, we will cover via close reading of crucial passages a selection of the DUBLINERS stories, A PORTRAIT OF THE ARTIST AS A YOUNG MAN, and the opening three chapters of ULYSSES. All of these will be read in a complex critical context, with a selection of representative secondary criticism and theory provided.
