To explain the phenomenon of Southern literature in American cultural context both from the traditional, Old Southern perspective (with the emphasis on family, tradition, and community) and the perspective of New Southern studies (with the emphasis on race, gender, and class). To discuss both Gothic heritage (stressing the grotesque elements) and modernism (stressing the concept of time). To question the fixed notions of Southern lady, Southern gentleman, and white trash, and see how the given works challenge Southern sterotypes.
