LECTURE:
Literature in the Age of Reason. Late 17th-century and 18th-century literature is discussed with special emphasis on the rise of the English novel from Defoe to Sterne and the Gothic novel.

SEMINAR:
OBJECTIVES
To provide a survey of canonical works of 18th-century English fiction. To focus both on individual texts and on the broader issues: origin and rise, production and consumption of the novel. To train students in critical reading and in expressing their judgement in a written form.

MATERIAL
Defoe, Moll Flanders or Robinson Crusoe, Fielding, Tom Jones, Sterne, Tristram Shandy, a Gothic novel, xerox packet and handouts, video.

ASSESSMENT
Presentation, longer essay, test.

Osvícenská literatura
Přednáška se zabývá literaturou konce 17. století a literaturou 18. století, přičemž zvláštní pozornost je věnována počátečnímu stadiu ve vývoji anglického románu od Defoea po Sterna a gotický román.
seminář:
Kurs poskytuje přehled klasických prozaických děl anglické literatury 18.století. Zaměřuje se na interpretaci jednotlivých textů, ale i na širší otázky: původ a vývoj románu, podmínky produkce a konzumace. Nedílnou součástí kursu je rozvoj studentských schopností kritického čtení a vyjadřování ústní a písemnou formou.
