The aim of this course is to delve into current developments in the Middle East region and explore the social and political forces that shape the region, and which often lie under current events as seen on the media. This course will analyze recent developments in the region, explore how they affect – and are affected by – other global events. The course will be built around analysis of specific countries and exploring the connections between events in them. The classes will be based on a mix of lectures, open debate, and analysis. No prior knowledge is required, but some awareness of recent developments will help give students context. General interest in current events will be helpful for class discussions.

1. Introduction – overview - the Middle East security situation today
2. Libya – from civil war to civil war?
3. Egypt – the fallen giant?
4. Syria – from order to chaos to (new) order?
5. Turkey, Saudia, Iran – the new rivalry?
6. Israel – villa in the jungle?
7. Conclusion: what does the future hold?

The course will be taught in English (participants are expected to have at least a B2 level of English).
