Preliminary scope of work

Koncept práce:
Tato práce bude teoretická, historicko-sociologického rázu, čili nebude pracovat s daty a nedojde ke statistickým závěrům. Půjde především o představení díla opomenutého amerického historika a sociologa W. E. B. Du Bois. Bude se týkat problematiky založení první sociologické školy na Atlantské univerzitě a bude se snažit zodpovědět, proč zrovna rozsáhlé dílo Du Boise – a jeho výzkumy na Atlanta University, se staly první sociologickou školou na americkém kontinentě. A proč dílo jeho sociologické školy bylo opomenuto a nestalo se inspirací pro další sociology. Důraz bude kladen především na jeho stěžejní práci – The Philadelphia Negro, ale také na jeho další výzkumy na Atlanta University. Budu se snažit porovnat tento rozsáhlý výzkum s pracemi chicagských sociologů ze slavné Chicagské školy. Budu se tedy snažit dojít k tomu, v jakých bodech bylo dílo Du Bois průkopnické, a v čem předběhl svou dobu.

Cíl práce:
V této diplomové práci prokáži význam amerického historika a sociologa Williama Edwarda Burkhardta Du Bois jako významného vědce, zvláště pak pro založení první sociologické školy na Atlanta University.

Výzkumné otázky:
1. Jaký byl přínos práce Du Bois a jeho první sociologické školy v Atlantě? Co prokazuje, že opravdu založil první sociologickou školu ve Spojených Státech?
2. Dokázat důležitost díla a výzkumů Du Bois z hlediska kontextu, ve kterém vznikly. Ukázat, které z jeho poznatků byly nejdůležitější.
3. Jaké užíval Du Bois metodologické přístupy? V čem navazoval na své předchůdce? V čem na Charlese Bootha? A v čem jej překonal?

Preliminary scope of work in English

Concept of the thesis:
This will be a theoretical, historical-sociological thesis - thus I will not work with data and I will not finish with some statistical conclusions. Main aim of this thesis is to introduce the life-work of "forgotten" American historian and sociologist W. E. B. Du Bois. My thesis will concern the foundation of first sociological school on American continent - at the Atlanta University. I will try to answer why the wide work of Du Bois - with all his researches done at the Atlanta University - count as the first sociological school on American continent. And further more why all his work was "forgotten" and didn´t become an inspiration for other sociologists. The key research, for me, will be The Philadelphia Negro but I will also focus my attention to Du Bois´ other works at the Atlanta University. I will try to compare his biggest project with researches of other sociologists, mainly from the famous Chicago University. In the end I will say why the work of Du Bois was innovative and why he was slightly "ahead of time".

Main goal of the thesis:
In this work I will show the importance of American historian and sociologist William Burkhardt Du Bois as the key scientist for foundation of the first sociological school on American continent - at the Atlanta University.

Research questions:
1. What was the benefit of Du Bois´ work and his sociological school at Atlanta University? What shows that he truly founded the first sociological school on American continent?
2. Show the importance of Du Bois´s work in the context they were conducted. Show which of his many findings are the most important.
3. What methodological approaches did Du Bois use? Did he followed some approaches of his predecessors? In what way did he followed approaches of Charles Booth? In what did Du Bois exceed?
