Saprotrophic fungi are the major decomposers of dead organic mass in the soil, e.g. fallen leaves, twigs and other biomolecules. Among fungal decomposers, saprotrophic basidiomycetes play a unique role due to their ability to efficiently degrade lignin ? a polyphenolic polymer that is one of the main components of wood and litter. The aim of this work is (1) to characterise the fungal community in a forest soil with respect to the occurrence of saprotrophic basidiomycetes in soil profile and in different phases of litter transformation; (2) to correlate the activity of lignocellulose-degrading enzymes with fungal biomass and the occurrence of basidiomycetes in the course of litter transformation.
