Research question and motivation
The main research question that I plan to study and explain in my thesis is to show a relationship between voter turnout in the Czech communal election given several shocks, high inflation, increase in the electricity prices etc and the influence it has on several groups of voters given their involuntary decrease of income. In response to the economic shocks like Covid-19 or in this case the high inflation together with other factors the preferences of necessary policies of voters change [Rosenblum, 2020]. Moreover, the question is if also their voting preference and the voter turnout changes in response to this shock. Ahlquist, Copelovith and Walter (2020) argue that during their study in Poland that the people who are materially exposed to the external shock show much greater instability in their voter behavior and policy selection. Contribution The high rate of inflation, electricity prices etc. were caused mainly by a completely unprecedented war in Ukraine, therefore they can be seen as an exogenous shock. These high rates have not been recorded since December of 1993, there this paper aims to compare previous rates of voter turnout with this year. The influence of one’s income on their voter turnout is undeniable. Richer people vote more likely then poorer people. Will the relative increase in the gap between these groups lead to a different voter turnout in these elections? This hypothesis should be confirmed in the paper. This paper will elaborate on previous results, use voter turnout and behavior as it is documented in literature such PAQ research which works with local data in the Czech Republic. Matsubayashi with Sakaiya (2021) suggest that the growing income inequality may not necessarily lead to political inequality and lower voter turnout rather than to become a threat to validity of the election itself. Methodology I will work with the data that will be obtained from the Czech Statistical Office (www.czso.cz), this data will be mainly used to show differences in voter turnout before and after the relatively high inflation. The data regarding specific social factors such as people who face distraints, single parents or people living on the poverty line will be obtained from PAQ research (https://www.paqresearch.cz). I will use a regression model in a form of autoregressive model where the results from previous elections and factors that influenced voter turnout will be used as additional explanatory variables to those that I will measure via the Czech Statistical Office data for this year’s elections.
