The study will use the Fairclough approach in Critical Discourse Analysis to analyse the speeches made
by the three women.
All the speeches made by the three subjects between 2020-2021 will be transcribed from the official sites
of the Indian Parliament (Lok Sabha TV and Rajya Sabha TV) and each speech would be studied under
the following:
- Date and Topic: When the speech was made and what the issue spoken on was?
- Time and Location: How long was the speech and where it was made (Lok Sabha or Rajya
Sabha)?
- Content: What was said along with facts, figures and statistics used to substantiate the
statements/arguments? How much influence did partisan ideology have?
- Stance: What does the tone and language of the speech indicate - defensive or aggressive stance
on the issue?
- Conclusion: What was asked as the preferred resolution to the issue?

- Reception: How was the speech received – were there shows of support or interruptions – by
who?
The study will also intend to examine the speeches in the context of the socio-political situation in the
country to understand what necessitated the issue being raised in the Parliament.

Předběžná náplň práce v anglickém jazyce
The study will look at the speeches made in the two houses of the Indian Parliament by three female
politicians. The subjects for the study: Priyanka Chaturvedi, Mahua Moitra and Meenakshi Lekhi are
politicians currently serving as Members of Parliament (MPs) from the political parties Shiv Sena,
Trinamool Congress (TMC) and Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) respectively. Chaturvedi has been elected to
the Rajya Sabha (upper house of the Indian Parliament) and Moitra and Lekhi to the Lok Sabha (lower
house of the Indian Parliament).
The women are educated, articulate and visible (have an active presence in social and mainstream media)
proponents of their respective political parties. They differ in their behavioural characteristics and thought
tendencies. Furthermore, they had a different career before (in Lekhi's case, in addition to) becoming a
politician.
While there has been analysis done on speeches made by Indian politicians in the Parliament, during
election campaigns and on national and international platforms, I would like to contribute to the existing
research with a focussed study on what current female politicians have to say in the Parliament. Through
this study, I would like to take a look at the issues they have raised and addressed in the parliament, their
speech presentation and stance on the issue in terms of partisan influences, and the import of the female
voters in their speeches. I would also like to look at the impact or influence their gender has on the issues
they have addressed and the reception from their listeners (colleagues in parliament).
