Práce se zabývá problematikou diplomatických vztahů mezi Spojenými státy a Japonskem po celá 30. léta 20. století. Záměrem práce je rozebrat historické, sociální a kulturní kontexty, které v USA a Japonsku tvořily základ pro diplomatickou spolupráci mezi oběma státy. Následně se autor snaží zmapovat nejdůležitější události v bilaterální vztazích, kterými se zabývali diplomaté daných zemí ve 30. letech. Dalším cílem je prokázat na základě analýzy složitých vnitrostátních procesů na to, že v Japonsku skoro neexistoval jednotný postoj k otázce, jaké diplomatické vztahy s USA mít. Ve své podstatě je tato práce diplomatickou historii mezi Spojenými státy a Japonskem. Nejprve se v práci rozebírá historický kontext, který je nezbytný pro vysvětlení vývoje Japonska a jeho antagonistické postoje vůči USA. Následující kapitoly se zabývají konkrétními událostmi, které se odehrávaly během meziválečného období a diplomatickou reakcí na ně z obou stran. Spolu s tím je vysvětlován postupný vývoj vztahů směrem k antagonismu. V závěru autor shrnuje celý vývoj diplomatických vztahů mezi USA a Japonskem a snaží se odpovědět, jaké skutečné postoje zastávaly před válkou obě strany vzhledem k sociálnímu a dobovému dění.

This thesis is concerned with the issue of diplomatic relations between the United States of America and Japan during the 1930s. The aim of the work is to examine the historical, social and cultural contexts which formed the basis of the the diplomatic cooperation between the two states. In the following part, the author is attempting to mark the most important events in the mutual relations, which were the focus of the diplomats of both states in the 30s. The other purpose of the work is to reveal, based on the analysis of the complex internal state processes, that there did not exist a unified approach to the question of what shape should the diplomatic relationship with USA take. In essence, this work is a diplomatic history between the United States and Japan. In the opening part of the work there is an analysis of the historical context, which is irreplaceable in explaining the development that Japan had undergone, and its antagonizing stances towards the US. The following chapters are focused on the specific events, which played out during the interwar period century and the diplomatic reactions to them from the both sides. The gradual development of relations towards hostility is explained throughout the chapters. In the conclusion, the author summarizes the whole development of the diplomatic relationship between USA and Japan and tries to answer what actual stances both sides took before the war, in regards to the social and historical developments.
