This bachelor thesis deals with Bill Clinton’s and George W. Bush’s administration efforts to secure the southern border of the USA, in order to stop illegal migration and illegal drug trade. The thesis deals with securing efforts in Tucson border sector in Arizona known as Operation Safeguard specifically. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, secure borders have become one of the main topics of American public debate. Bill Clinton’s administration has begun with a radical budget increase for federal border enforcement. The thesis focuses on the period of 12 years, starting in 1994 when Operation Safeguard began and ending in 2006 when mass-construction of border fence in Arizona began. The thesis investigates if the Operation Safeguard was a success, what were it’s outcomes and did it affect local illegal migration, with the added context of the US-Mexico border as a whole. The investigation is done by analysis of primary and secondary sources.
