Recent advances in Monte Carlo methods for light transport simulation have enabled generating realistic images through accurate, physically-based simulation of the behavior of light. However, the simulation results can only be as accurate as the input models describing the appearance of the scene, and this concerns especially the appearance of scene surfaces. The goal of this thesis is therefore to advance the state-of-the-art in material appearance modeling, especially for materials with complex meso-structures, including various signs of wear and other imperfections.
