Goal of this thesis is to re-implement and extend Hero Wavelength Spectral Sampling (HWSS), a recently published spectral rendering technique, within ART, a rendering research system used at Charles University. The technique was originally developed for Manuka, the next-generation rendering system at Weta Digital in New Zealand. Manuka is a complex commercial system, but does not support some more advanced rendering features such as computations that take the polarisation state of light into account, and support for fluorescent materials. Inclusion of such effects in a rendering system brings about significant internal changes both in terms of the data structures one has to use, and in terms of how the stochastic integration that is at the core of modern renderers has to be done.
The main goal of this thesis is to explore how HWSS is best implemented in such an extended system that features both polarisation and fluorescence. A secondary goal of this thesis is to perform tests on the colorimetric performance of a HWSS system for corner cases such as very spiky illumination spectra. So far, such tests have not been performed with the technique, as they were not a priority during the original development. |
