Liran Shaul is one of the best teachers I've had and his classes were always the highlight of my academic week. He takes a little getting used to (and especially his handwriting, which is, with one exception, the worst I've encountered at the faculty), but his remarkable insights and ability to draw connections between disciplines well make up for it. Lastly, I'd like to remark that I really liked Liran Shaul's comments regarding modern developments in the subject, as well as his personal research and contributions to it. It made it feel much more 'alive' than is standard.

Matsumura's Commutative Ring Theory served as an excellent basis for the course, which I found exceedingly interesting and well-presented. I really, really like Liran Shaul's innovative approach to grading, which I wish more professors adopted. Instead of a traditional examination, Liran Shaul prepared a 'guided study', which is essentially a proof of an interesting result through a series of lemmata left to the student to prove during a generous time-window (weeks or months) using the tools he had acquired throughout the semester. It need be said, however, that although the time alotted to solving the guided study is generous, it is possible to complete it within a week.
